James Taylor: Dairy Farm Portrush

James Taylor farms 500 acres of land on the edge of Portrush, and some of the land has been in his family since his great-grandparents moved there in 1918. The present business was started by his grandparents in 1949 and it is now run by James in partnership with his parents. Traditionally a beef finishing operation with a little arable crop as well, the family decided to move into spring calf dairying a couple of years ago.
In February 2020, the farm began calving and milking from a herd of 260 crossbred dairy heifers. The family decided to install a 50-point rotary parlour because it was the quickest and most efficient way to milk their dairy cattle. They were also searching for a similarly efficient solution for their hot water requirements across the entire farm.
James was introduced to the concept of the Flogas Instant Hot Water system by Andy Graham of Tankcare (part of the Dale Farm Cooperative). Tankcare has partnered with Flogas to install LPG hot water solutions on several member farms. Attracted by the efficiency and on-demand benefits of the system, James was introduced by Andy to Craig Johnston, the local Flogas area sales executive. Craig was able to give James a lot of helpful advice on how the system would work for all his family farm’s hot water needs.
James said: “We decided to opt for the Flogas hot water solution as the team were so helpful in not only explaining the benefits of the system to our farm but also in advising on tank and water heater siting. It fitted well with what we wanted to achieve on the farm”
