2024 Report: LGUK Response to Biomass Strategy
9 June 2025

A report from energy consultancy Gemserv has found that gasifying waste-based feedstocks, such as municipal solid waste (MSW), to produce biogases is an effective method to decarbonise properties that are not connected to the gas network.
Key Findings:
- Up to 92% Carbon Reduction: RLGs offer a significant reduction in carbon emissions, making them the lowest carbon conventional fuel available for off-grid properties.
- Cost-Effective Heating: RLGs provide the lowest levelized cost of heat, making them an economically viable option for rural homes that are challenging to decarbonise.
- Ease of Transition: Consumers can continue using their existing LPG boilers, switching to RLGs as they become available, with no need for expensive infrastructure changes.
- Circular Economy Benefits: RLGs are produced from waste-based feedstocks, such as municipal solid waste, supporting a circular economy and contributing to the decarbonisation of the waste lifecycle.
As the UK continues its journey toward achieving net-zero emissions, Renewable Liquid Gases (RLGs) are emerging as a key solution for decarbonising homes and businesses that are not connected to the gas network.
